INDIANAPOLIS – Spending the first 200 days of her life in the hospital, Miracle Mullins has proved she’s a fighter and was finally released from Riley Children’s Hospital.
Mullins weighed just 1 pound and 3 ounces when she was born 3-and-a-half months early. As a premature baby she had to undergo five surgeries to correct a heart defect, issues with her intestines and swelling around her brain.
The series of procedures Mullins experienced, called Endoscopic third vetricoloscopy cord plexus cardirization, draws spinal fluid in the brain and reduces the amount of spinal fluid produced. Mullins was the first baby in Indiana to have the procedure done.
Besides being born at a South Bend Hospital, Mullins and her mother Milika have called Riley Children’s Hospital their home for the last 8 months.
“We had kept our faith and stayed strong, so I can actually say, she is my Miracle,” said Milika. “Her surgeries have been the most challenging for us, because any mom would hate to see her baby get wheeled away and go down to surgery.”
Doctors said while the procedure can still fail, they are optimistic.
“Look, this is my baby,” said Milika. “I have faith in my daughter. Long as she's fighting, I'm going to continue to fight with her.”
Mullins and her mother returned back to South Bend Tuesday evening.
