INDIANAPOLIS -- Public safety personnel joined together Wednesday to build a ramp on the birthday of a young girl who lost her leg in a train accident last month.
Breanna Brooks was playing on the tracks between Lynhurst and Holt Roads near Garden City Elementary School when she fell and her leg was run over by a train.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Sergeant Matt Morgan was one of the first officers on the scene that day – he said the trauma to Brooks’ leg was severe and he used a kit to try to control it.
“I had a tourniquet from one of the trauma kits and I managed to put it on her leg,” said Sgt. Morgan. “I felt terrible doing it because I know it hurt her, but it’s one of those things that needed to be done.”

It was that effort and the effort of all of the emergency crews who responded that helped save Brooks’ life – but they couldn’t save her leg.
On Wednesday, Brooks’ 12th birthday, police, firefighters and paramedics gathered together to build a ramp for the young girl to get safely in and out of her home.

Brooks’ grandfather calls the effort and the support they have received from law enforcement since her accident “amazing.”
“Awesome, all of them,” said Jerry Brooks. “The fire department has been awesome and the police officers that have been there. All of them have been awesome and everything."
