LAWRENCE, Ind. — Several people were taken into custody Friday evening after someone fired a shot at a detective driving an unmarked cruiser during what's believed to be a road rage incident in Lawrence.
Lawrence police say a detective was driving in the area of 42nd Street and Richelieu Road when another vehicle passed him and then abruptly stopped, firing a shot at the detective's unmarked cruiser. That driver then sped away.
The detective used their police radio to tell other officers who responded to the area and stopped the vehicle a short time later. During the stop, a passenger was seen throwing a gun out of the window.
Officers recovered the gun and took six people inside the vehicle into custody for questioning.
Lawrence police say a 19-year-old was preliminary charged with carrying a handgun without a license and a 16-year-old was preliminary charged with recklessness with a deadly weapon and carrying a handgun without a license.
No injuries were reported and there was no damage to either vehicle involved in the possible road rage incident.
An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer who was responding to Lawrence to assist with the incident was involved in a crash on the I-70 ramp near Post Road. Police say the driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The officer was not injured.
Both the shooting and the crash remain under investigation.
