Growing trees block lane of traffic near U.S. 31 on south side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Drivers on the city's south side are impacted by trees growing into a lane of traffic at Stop Road 12, between Shelby Street and US 31.

"It's very dangerous because there's no way to get off of this road to avoid hitting someone," Jon Morris, who served on the Perry Township school board for nine years, said.

Morris is worried drivers - including school buses - having to swerve into oncoming traffic on Stop Road 12 to avoid trees scratching their cars.

"It's a problem in the winter or summer, but in the summer when this foliage is covered with leaves, they extend clear out over the road," he said.

Not to mention, a street sign is blocked, too. Morris is concerned someone will get injured, or worse, because of how busy this little connecting road is.

"It is a busy, busy area. Shelby Street is busy all the time and US 31 you can hardly drive down," he said.

Morris says he has contacted the mayor's office about getting the shrubbery trimmed, but hasn't received much traction.

"It seems like it'd be a simple thing to solve," he said. "All you do is cut back the foliage."

RTV6 reached out to the Department of Public Works and are waiting to hear back on when they will send out an inspector to address the request.

To begin a work order, or get an inspection done, you have to fill out a form on Request Indy, or through the mayors action center.
