INDIANAPOLIS — A 65-year-old man was shot and killed by police early Monday morning on Indianapolis' south side.
The incident happened at about 1:30 a.m., in the 6200 block of Monteo Drive, which is near the intersection of Harding Street and Edgewood Avenue.
According to Officer Genae Cook, a spokesperson with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded because they received a dropped 911 call from the house. When officers arrived, the homeowner began immediately firing at them, Cook said. It is unclear if the homeowner was inside or outside when the shots started.
Two officers returned fire, and the homeowner was hit by the gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
That man was identified as Daniel Cedars, 65.
Several other people were in the home at the time of the shooting, but they were asleep.
The incident will be investigated by a Critical Incident Response Team, Internal Affairs, and Marion County prosecutors, which is all standard procedure.
"This is a tragedy for everyone involved, not just for the homeowner and his family but also for the officers involved," Cook said.
