INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman saved both a pregnant mother and the mother's 3-year-old son from drowning in an apartment pool Wednesday afternoon on Indianapolis' south side.

Jennifer Potter, the assistant apartment manager of Brookwood Apartments, was making her rounds with a maintenance worker at around noon when they noticed a commotion around the pool, according to an Indianapolis Fire Department spokesperson,

When they got closer, Potter could see somebody was in the pool and in trouble.

"She was underneath him and he was on top of her," said Potter.

As people around the pool were yelling for help, Potter emptied her pockets, removed her shoes and jacket and jumped into the pool.

She grabbed the 3-year-old boy and handed him to bystanders, then saw a submerged woman, fully clothed, in the pool. She grabbed the woman and lifted her face out of the water, as bystanders helped get her out. The woman in the pool is six months pregnant, the spokesperson said.

"I was like, oh my goodness this woman is pregnant as well... EMT came back and said you saved three lives today not just two," said Potter.

The woman and her son were hospitalized, but both are expected to make a full recovery.

Witnesses said the mom and the boy were walking around the pool when he slipped and fell in. The mom, who can't swim, jumped in and held him up until Potter rescued them.

Potter told fire authorities she is a good swimmer, but she doesn't swim a lot. She said she just acted on instinct and never gave a second thought to jumping in to save the mother and boy.

"It was meant to be. I was meant to be there yesterday," said Potter.
