INDIANAPOLIS -- Problems with accessibility at a Franklin Township middle school have been fixed after a frustrated eighth grader shared her story online.
"Hi. I'm Beck. I'm 14-years-old. I'm making this video because some stuff has been happening to me personally," she said in a post to Facebook Thursday morning.
Beck goes on to talk about the hurdles she's faced at Franklin Township Middle School East.
"When you're in a public facility, it's like, by law, you need to have a handicap accessible door," she said in the video.
Beck says, for a year, the power doors didn't open from the outside. The elevator would also break down, causing her to miss class - upstairs.
"If you're going to be a public school you need to set certain things in line so that I can get my education just like you. Just like any other kid," said Beck in the video.
Her Facebook post got thousands of views and the attention of school administrators, who called for a sit down meeting with Beck's family.
"We were so surprised when we walked up to the building today and pressed that button and it opened. And we knew immediately that Rebecca's video made a big difference," said Erik Kilmark, Beck's father.
It turns out the door issue was a simple fix. There's a switch that enables the power button.
There's now also a contingency plan for when the elevator breaks.
Even though she's getting ready to leave middle school, Kilmark says she's happy knowing others will have an easier time than she did.
"Knowing that I made a difference for other people that are like me makes me feel, I don't know how to explain it. I think they're going to be more aware of the minority of their students," said Beck.
