INDIANAPOLIS -- A man was killed and a woman was hospitalized Wednesday morning in a fire on Indianapolis' southeast side.

The fire started around 1 a.m., at a house in the 1200 block of Vandeman Street.

Firefighters on the scene say a 58-year-old Roderick Smiley, who used a wheelchair, died in the fire. His 63-year-old girlfriend made it out of the house, with the help of the responders. She is in critical condition at Eskenazi Hospital.

The damage is estimated at about $75,000.

There were no working smoke detectors in the house.
