SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- The Town of Speedway is getting better connected as work begins on the next phase of the 5-mile trail plan.
The grand opening is slated next month for the B&O Trail that follows the old B&O rail line.
The trail runs from Allison Way just east of Main Street to Eagle Creek for approximately 1.6 miles and will be open to bikers, walkers and runners.
The Allison Way to Main Street portion is already paved. Work is scheduled to start next week to pave the remaining 1.4 miles that runs between 11th and 12th streets and on the south side of Leonard Park to Eagle Creek. Speedway Economic Development Director Tim Gropp says the goal is to have the trail paved by the grand opening set for September 15.
A new traffic light system is also being installed just south of the Speedway Police and Fire Stations, where the trail crosses Lynhurst Drive. The HAWK system will stop traffic for pedestrians to cross the busy road safely.
The grand opening for the B&O Trail is Saturday, September 15, at Leonard Park in Speedway. Ceremonies begin at 9:30 am. That will be followed by a 5K run to begin raising money to build the final connection of the 5-mile trail loop, which is the Eagle Creek Trail. That fundraising effort is being spearheaded by the Speedway Trails Association. Gropp told RTV6 the hope is to eventually tie the B&O Trail into the Eagle Creek Trail and to also continue the B&O into Hendricks County once a bridge is installed over Eagle Creek.
