INDIANAPOLIS -- A student was struck while crossing the street on IUPUI’s campus Wednesday – just two days after another crash a block away claimed the life of another IUPUI student.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Michigan and Blake streets.

According to campus police, an IUPUI student had stepped out of an IndyGo bus when he apparently entered the flow of traffic.

Witnesses said an oncoming vehicle attempted to swerve to miss the student, but was unable to maneuver in time.

Police said the student suffered a suspected broken foot, but was not believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The student was taken from the scene by ambulance. Police said the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperating with officers.

The crash happened just a block north of the intersection where 18-year-old IUPUI sophomore Fatima Hassuneh was struck and killed Monday afternoon.

Witnesses told police Hassuneh was crossing the street with the right of way when a bus owned by Durham Transportation apparently made a left turn, striking her.

Hassuneh was declared dead at the scene.

Alysa Schultz, a former IUPUI student who witnessed the crash and comforted Hassuneh in her final moments, said bystanders and first responders did everything they could to save her.
