INDIANAPOLIS — Three people were taken hostage following a brief police chase on the east side of Indianapolis early Friday.

According to information from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, it began with a traffic stop in the 1600 block of North Gladstone Avenue around 12:55 a.m. Friday.

After the driver of a vehicle refused to stop for an IMPD officer, there was a brief police pursuit, which ended in the the 3100 block of Brookside Parkway North.

Police said an officer saw that one of the suspect was armed during a brief foot pursuit. The suspect ran in the backdoor of a house and the pursuit became a hostage situation. Both the SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called to the scene, police said.

The SWAT team had to work to figure out how to get the hostages out of the house safely because the house was set up like an apartment with the suspects and hostages in separate areas, police said.

Eventually, the SWAT team knoocked down the door and used a diversionary device to distract the suspects, who then quickly surrendered.

Police said there were three people taken hostage — two females and one male. They were checked by medics at the scene and were unharmed physically.

Two men were taken into custody.
