INDIANAPOLIS — Plans for a music hall on the west side of Indianapolis would be located at an address with a violent past.
The Citadel Music Hall is seeking a license to sell beer and wine at the site located at 6447 West Washington Street.
Acts at the music hall are apparently booked already, according to their website.
The city county councilor for the area, Jared Evans, posted eight incidents of violence that have occurred at that site since 2009 on his Facebook page. The latest being a murder that took place August 18 of last year. He wrote, "this is not the best fit for our community."
The general manager for the music hall, Terry Copeland, said it will be safe and secure.
"We would have parking lot attendants, we would have security at each one of the entrances. We would have security circulating the building. We would have security doing check-ins. We would have pat-downs," Copeland said. "We would definitely have security floating back and forth everywhere. It's the mood that is set. It's who you are bringing in."
That said, there are still folks in the community that are skeptical.
"They wanted to put a fireworks place here and the neighborhood vetoed that because we didn't want fireworks here," Sherri Bennett, an area resident, said. " I'm sure the whole neighborhood is not gonna like additional alcohol and crime. They aren't gonna like that around here."
There is a hearing about the liquor license scheduled for March 4th at the City County Building.
Citadel has run music venues in Chicago.
The west side Chamber of Commerce and Indy Gateway are having a meeting on Wednesday night to establish their position on whether to support or oppose the liquor license for the music hall.
