Savannah Bettis was tragically killed as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning on June 4, 2015.

Her parents, John and Wendy Bettis, have been pushing for carbon monoxide testing and donating proper testing equipment to fire departments.

“This is important to me and Wendy to bring a little bit of closure toward Savannah’s passing,” said John Bettis. “We also want to protect from others in the state to not let it happen to someone else.”

Sen. Mike Delph, the bill’s author, said he is thankful for the work John and Wendy Bettis for helping prevent other tragedies like this from happening in Indiana.

“I would like to congratulate John and Wendy Bettis for having the strength to turn this terrible family tragedy into something positive for their fellow Hoosiers,” said Sen. Delph. “When the Bettis family came to me about this issue, I knew action needed to be taken. I am confident Savannah’s Law will save lives by giving people the opportunity to go to their local participating fire department and test their vehicles for carbon monoxide at no cost.”

Governor Holcomb ended the ceremony by noting, “This law will save lives.”

The law goes into effect July 1.

“Savannah would be screaming ‘way to go mom and dad’ and she would support us 100 percent,” said John Bettis.
