INDIANAPOLIS — A man is in "extreme" critical condition after an apartment fire Thursday afternoon on the west side of Indianapolis, according to the fire department.
Indianapolis Fire Department firefighters were called to the fire around 3:30 p.m. on North Traub Avenue, near West Washington Street and North Belmont Avenue.
A 74-year-old man was found unconscious in an upstairs unit and was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the fire department believes it was possibly started in a vacant apartment occupied by people living there illegally on the first floor.
The American Red Cross is working to find shelter for six people who were displaced.
