SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- If you feel the need for speed, there's a new option in Speedway.

Bicycle enthusiast Frank Merritt recently started the Speedway Bicycle Club.

30 members showed up for the first official ride on June 26.

“We want to grow bike culture and encourage cycling activity in Speedway,” Merritt said. “We want to be connected to the City of Indianapolis and all the trails that are being constructed.”

The Speedway Bicycle Club will meet regularly on Tuesday night with some weekend options.

Merritt said they will concentrate on rules of the road and safety, and are open to ages 8 through 80.

Big Woods Speedway, Quaff-On, and Hard Truth are club sponsors.

“We have an SBC Bike to the Ballpark event on July 15th and will be riding from Speedway to Victory Field and back,” Merritt said. “Victory Field is providing secure bike parking inside the stadium.”

Merritt said the founding fathers of the town of Speedway were heavily involved in the bicycle industry.

“It is with that spirit of cycling that we bring you the Speedway Bicycle Club,” Merritt said. “The purpose of our club is to provide fun, fellowship and healthy lifestyle choice of cycling with planned bicycle rides around town and branching out to other parts of our city.  As our Town, our very own Speedway Trails Association and the City of Indianapolis complete the trails around us we will be able to eventually conduct rides to Eagle Creek, the Indianapolis Zoo, Victory Field and other destinations by trail.”

You can join the club at 6 p.m. on Tuesday nights at Big Woods in Speedway.

Modeled after the Speedway Running Club, memberships are $35 for an individual and $50 for a family/couple.

Memberships include:

  • T-shirt with SBC and sponsor logos
  • Speedway Bicycle Club Pint glass from Quaff-On/Big Woods
  • Quaff On Growler with SBC logo and Growler bike cage with VIP membership of $100pp
  • Discounts on bikes and accessories at Bicycle Outfitters of Indianapolis (closest shop to Speedway)
