SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- The Town of Speedway wants to hear from its residents about what should be built on a rare large piece of open land on the west side of town.
The area is 2500 N. High School Road. The 25-acre parcel is between I-465, High School Road and north of Crawfordsville Road.
The new interchange at I-465 and I-74 and the realignment of Crawfordsville Road a few years ago were the catalysts to opening the area to development. The town also acquired a couple of old motels in that space and tore them down.
“This really is the gateway to Speedway,” Speedway Economic Development Director Tim Gropp said. "This is our chance to take what used to be a really dilapidated entrance and make a really pretty entrance to the community. We host a lot of visitors and think it’s very important to showcase ourselves right from the beginning.”
Gropp says they're not looking to put anything residential in this area. It's seen as a commercial development. But they want to learn residents' ideas. There is a public input session for that purpose Monday at the Speedway Public Library from 5-6:30 p.m.
Gropp said they would like to get a developer under contract and start working on the engineering phase by the end of the year and break ground next spring.
