SPEEDWAY, Ind.--  Dozens of Speedway students are selling their art for a good cause.

Elementary art teacher Jon Mummert partnered with the Speedway Centre for the Arts to display the art work of fifth and sixth grade students.

The students donated their art to the center to be sold with all proceeds to benefit each school’s art department.

More than 200 people showed up to the first of three shows, held on January 19, which included art work from Newby and Fisher Elementary schools.

“This show is just another way of showcasing student strengths other than that from the academic realm,” said Mummert. “The students shine with pride seeing their work hung in a non-school area like the art center causing  them to feel a sense of value on a community wide level which is on a larger scale than the school wide level where they are used to being recognized.  The show also helps place an emphasis on the importance of the arts and education which seems to be fading in our current educational system at large.”

The theme of the project is music, so the art work shows guitars, pianos and other musical instruments.

The work displayed on January 19 will remain on sale until the next show on February 29.

The Speedway Art Centre is located at 1340 Main Street in Speedway.

Upcoming shows:
•    Allison Elementary: February 29th 6pm – 8pm
•    Wheeler Elementary: March 2nd 6pm – 8pm
