INDIANAPOLIS-- Volunteers are adding a new touch to a new park on the west side.
Community members are building a little pantry, also known as a blessing box, in the new Shelton Heights neighborhood park located near West Washington Street and Holt Road.
The pantry will be called “Susan’s Little Pantry” in honor of Susan Seel, a woman killed at work in a 2016 robbery.
“She had a passion for her church’s food bank,” said organizer Debbie Parish.
The mini pantry will provide food, diapers and other necessities for people in need.
“Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is supplying the materials and one of our residents, Butch Walker, will be making it,” said Parish.
Workers broke ground in April on the neighborhood park.
The land used to be a trailer park that attracted trash, drugs, crime and other problems.
Work will continue on the park all year, which will include planting vegetation, installing playground equipment, and building benches and a walking trail.
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful selected the Shelton Heights land as one of five green spaces they’ll transform in 2018 with funding and volunteers.
A public unveiling is anticipated for spring 2019.
