WESTFIELD — There is now another baby box in central Indiana ready to accept a newborn whose parents want to anonymously surrender the child safely.

The new Safe Haven Baby Box is installed at Westfield Fire Station No. 83 on Grassy Branch Road. It is the 51st baby box in the country and the 47th in Indiana.

The boxes are equipped with alarm systems that immediately notify staff at the fire station. They have heating and cooling systems and lock as soon as the baby is placed inside.

In Indiana, nine babies have been surrendered inside Safe Haven Baby Boxes since the first was installed in 2016.
