CONNERSVILLE, Ind. – Two inmates died Tuesday morning after police believe they ingested drugs smuggled into the Fayette County Jail.

Detectives with Indiana State Police said three men were found unresponsive in a jail cell just after midnight. Facility staff and EMS began treatment and the men were taken to Fayette Regional Health Hospital where two of the three men were pronounced dead.

The third inmate was taken to Reid Health in Richmond and is expected to survive, according to officers.

Police said the men were found unresponsive about an hour after the third inmate was arrested in Fountain City and placed into the cell with the other two inmates.

Detectives believe the men ingested a drug smuggled into the facility, but they won’t know for sure until toxicology tests are completed.

The names of those involved were not released by police.
