FRANKLIN — A 49-year-old Greenwood man charged in the November 2018 murder of his mother has been found "not guilty by reason of insanity."

John Hatton was arrested for the strangulation death of 70-year-old Carla Hatton who was found dead inside her Greenwood home.

That's also where police located John Hatton, who was suffering from a self-inflicted injury to his neck.

According to Johnson County Prosecutor Joe Villanueva, two court-appointed experts concluded Hatton was unable to "appreciate the wrongfulness of his conduct at the time of the crime." A third expert who conducted examinations for the prosecutor came to the same conclusion.

Exactly what happens to Hatton now will be determined by the courts. He's currently in the custody of the State Department of Mental Health.
