BARGERSVILLE, Ind. -- Bargersville Community Fire Department covers a wide area of Johnson County, and thanks to a grant they now have a new lifesaving device that can help them assist people in need.

The Lucas 3 CPR assistance device was paid for with a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The device itself would've cost the department $16,000.

The Lucas 3 CPR device provides chest compressions during a cardiac arrest event which frees up rescuers to handle airway and medication administration.

Chief Jason Ramey says they are the first department in Johnson County to have access to a device like this and that Station 201 will use it on runs. Medic 201 in particular covers the largest geographical response area in the county. Bargersville Community Fire Department as a whole covers 62 square miles.

"Extended transport times can be labor intensive," said Chief Ramey. "This device helps us to maximize our limited staffing."

Firefighters trained Tuesday with the new CPR device on a dummy before putting it in service.
