WHITELAND, Ind. -- A couple accused of overdosing in the parking lot of a Whiteland truck stop last week while a child sat in the back seat of their vehicle has been arrested.

Samantha Jean Thompson and Michael Aron Tanner were Friday on a warrant for neglect of a dependent.

Whiteland police were called to the Loves Travel Center on June 13 after receiving multiple reports of two people overdosing inside a vehicle.

When police arrived, they found a woman and an unconscious man outside the vehicle. Emergency crews administered Naloxone to the man, and both went to the hospital for treatment.

A witness told police she had noticed the child in the back seat when the couple started overdosing and had taken the child inside the gas station to safety.

At the hospital, Tanner told police he had snorted a small amount of heroin that day in the car while the child was in the back seat. He said he did not remember anything about the incident.

Thompson told police that she had smoked some spice and couldn't remember what happened.

The Department of Child Services took custody of the child, and warrants were issued for Tanner and Thompson's arrests.

Both were taken into custody Friday and face charges of neglect of a dependent.
