Franklin environmental results show no signs of cancer-causing chemicals near old plant

FRANKLIN, Ind. -- New environmental results out of Franklin show no signs of dangerous chemicals that could potentially cause cancer, but testing will continue.

The city of Franklin has been under a microscope since a group of concerned residents raised questions about a potential cancer cluster near an old Amphenol plant.

“The city, state and federal agencies have been working diligently to ensure the safety and quality of life we all deserved,” said Franklin Mayor Steve Barnett.

The city hired an outside firm to do more testing and it found no health concern to homes near the old plant.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says based on the previous testing it needs to re-evaluate two homes in the area.

The state says it tested 24 drinking wells in the Paris Estate subdivision and those wells were all free of chemicals.

The Environmental Protection Agency says testing expanded to homes south of the Amphenol plant and the results from that testing are due back in October.

“We must work together to coordinate and expand sampling efforts so we can begin to answer critical questions about environmental contaminants in this community,” said Michael Harris with the EPA.

Another public forum will be held at the end of October and the state is planning to add a permanent air quality monitor to the city of Franklin.
