GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Combating hunger while serving others in Christ was the goal for volunteers in Greenwood over the weekend who took part in a one-day food packing project.

Mount Pleasant Christian Church invited churchgoers and community volunteers to help them pack 400,000 meals to send overseas to people in need.

More than 1,800 volunteers signed up in shifts throughout the day to pack what totaled more than 65,000 pounds of food. The youngest volunteer was just 4 years old, with the oldest volunteers in their mid-70s.

“As a church, our main focus is to not only serve others, but make a lasting IMPACT here locally and globally. Through our partnership with Pack Away Hunger, we’re able to show the love of Christ with mission partner New Pines Seminary, as they train church leaders and grow faith communities across the country," said Johnette Cruz, Communications Director of Mount Pleasant. "These meals will be a huge blessing to those in and around Cuba as they will be distributed to areas of need.”

Cruz said serving others is a core value of Mount Pleasant Christian Church.

The church partnered with the organization Pack Away Hunger to bag up the 400,000 Nutri-Plenty Meals in a one-day event. The Nutri-Plenty Meal is a highly nutritious blend of rice, soy, vegetables, and 21 vitamins and minerals scientifically proven to offset the effects of malnutrition.

The meals are sealed in a bag and packed up for the journey to families in need. The food will now travel more than 1,000 miles to communities in Cuba.

“We’re proud to come alongside Mount Pleasant Christian Church in their efforts to support their partner church in Cuba. Proper nutrition is a critical part of the success of any community,” said Pack Away Hunger Executive Director Larry Moore. “This event will allow congregation members and the public to engage in hands-on community service, and that leaves a lasting impact far beyond the meals that are created.”
