CALL 6: Greenwood residents want crossing arms on busy intersection with train crossing

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- As train traffic increases and accidents become more common, people living in Greenwood are asking someone to step up and help make a busy train crossing intersection safer.

The crossing at East Main Street currently has flashing lights, but with the uptick in train activity, people say there needs to be much more.

Ron Fox says he came close to being the latest train crash victim because of the lack of safety features at the intersection.

Besides the lack of safety features and the unpredictable lights, Ron says the position of the track at that intersection is blocked by greenery, and sometimes you can’t see a train coming until you’re actually on the tracks.

He wants the city to install crossing arms to block traffic when a train is actually coming through, rather than counting on people to make the right decisions.

“With all the traffic we get now, how busy this city is, we definitely need some form of crossing arms here,” said Fox.

Fox said he tried reaching out to the city and the mayor but was given different numbers for the railroad systems.

Call 6 Investigator Paris Lewbel also reached out to Louisville and Indiana Railroad but has not gotten a response.

Federal law says it’s up to the individual railroads to install crossing devices.

Railroad advocates suggest residents call the Louisville and Indiana Railroad directly to share their concerns and suggest they add crossing arms. They say hearing from the community is the best way to push a rail company to make those types of changes.
