GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A planned hotel in Greenwood has drawn the attention and ire of nearby residents.
The owners of the Barn at Bay Horse Inn, an event venue near the intersection of Stones Crossing Road (also known as County Road 700 N.) and State Road 135, want to build a hotel close to the venue.
Jason Mizen and others who live in the Cobblestone subdivision fear their homes would lose property value.
"As soon as you put commercial property right up on top of residential, you're going to lose your value because who wants to look out their back window and either they're looking at a three-story hotel or who wants to look at the fence line," said Mizen.
A representative for the Inn says the hotel would be far enough away that it wouldn't affect quality of life or feel of the neighborhood.
"Our idea for this was to rezone the front portion of our property to commercial so that we could one day discuss the possibility of bringing in a boutique hotel," Corey Elliot, Barn at Bay Horse Inn.
The Barn at Bay Horse is frequently booked for weddings, events, or corporate meetings.
According to a release, Barn at Bay Horse owner Amanda Cottinghamm says guests have longed for a nearby hotel. There is an inn nearby, but it only hold six people. The new planned boutique hotel would host 100.
The closest major hotel to the Barn at Bay Horse is much closer to Greenwood, about 15 minutes away from the venue. AirBnbs are also scarce. There are a few around the venue, but not enough to support a full wedding's worth of guests, as the hotel would be used for.
In order to build the hotel, Cottinghamm would have to get the zoning changed for that particular piece of land. To do that, she is trying to get her land rezoned to commercial. Cottingham started an online petition to get support. It has more than 100 signatures as of 1 p.m. Thursday.
The community residents against the hotel have their own online petition, trying to stop the zoning. As of Friday morning, it also has more than 100 signatures.
There is a Greenwood meeting planned for Monday evening to discuss the possible zoning changes.
