Pilot escapes after helicopter crashes in field near Franklin airport

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind, -- A pilot escaped a fiery crash in a field near the Franklin Flying Field Sunday evening. 

Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said the pilot was the only person on the plane when it crashed sometime before 6 p.m.

Sheriff Cox said the pilot was taken to the hospital awake and breathing but his injuries are unknown at this time.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time and the investigation will likely be turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration.
