JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. – Deputies are looking for a suspect accused of fraud after he allegedly claimed to be the sheriff’s office and acquired $5,500, a social security number and picture on a woman’s driver’s license.
On Friday, a woman received a call from a number that matched a number associated with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The woman told a deputy that a man who called her she had an outstanding warrant for not showing up to jury duty, according to a sheriff’s office report.
The woman then went to Kroger, purchased $5,500 on pre-paid debit cards, gave the card numbers, her social security number, and a photo of her driver’s license to the man on the phone, according to a sheriff’s office report.
The man said if she gave him the money on the prepaid cards, he would “take care of the warrant,” according to a sheriff’s office report.
A deputy said in a report that the man told the woman “she was making things harder than they needed to be and the he was charging her with resisting and would require more money to make that charge go away.”
Instead of buying the debit cards, the woman told a deputy she asked the man if she could bring money to the jail instead but was told by the man if she did, she would be arrested.
The woman drove to the sheriff’s office and when she arrived, the man somehow knew and threatened to release her information on child pornography websites if she sought assistance.
As she was pushing the call button at the jail, the man admitted to being a hacker and there was nothing deputies would be able to do to help her.
In total, she was on the phone with the man for almost three hours.
Sheriff Doug Cox says it's important for people to not fall victim and hang up on these types of callers.
