GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Some small business owners in Greenwood say construction along Madison Avenue is hurting their bottom line because its blocking customers.

Traffic is limited to one-way northbound on Madison until September.

Scott Sims says he's worried he won't be able to keep his doors open that long.

"Summer is the busiest time for me. This is where I make most of my money," said Sims, owner of Between the Bun.

Sims says a city project a few years back almost put him out of business.

"We survived. We made it through. But barely by the skin of our teeth," said Sims.

Now the city is widening sidewalks and adding a bike lane along Madison Avenue in hopes of becoming more pedestrian friendly.

"I understand economic growth and I understand progression. I get that. But when the economic growth and the progression starts to hurt the people that got you there in the first place, I have an issue with it," said Sims.

Officials held a public meeting in November to hear from business owners before construction began.

"They really just kind of did it to pacify us. They didn't listen to any of the ideas that we threw out to them. They just exactly what they wanted to do," said Sims.

He says concerns fell on deaf ears and the complaints were not addressed.

They City of Greenwood says they worked to keep one lane open to help the businesses.

"I have great customers. My customers, no matter what, they brave this stuff and they do exactly what we needed to do. But how long will they do that? asked Sims
