INGALLS, Ind. -- The former fire chief of an Indiana town has been charged with sexual exploitation of a child.

Brian Cushman, 29, is accused of providing alcohol to a minor, then having sexual contact with them while he was the chief of the Ingalls Fire Department.

Through a search warrant, investigators found sexually explicit images of the 17-year-old female minor and Cushman on his phone from January 2018.

"The sexual victimization of a child is a heinous crime," Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter said in a release. "And in this particular case, it’s even worse the crime is alleged to have been committed by a public safety official that we encourage our youth to seek out when they need help. I’m grateful to the dedicated state police forensic computer experts that were able to aid in the recovery of evidence of the alleged crimes."

Cushman faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
