MADISON COUNTY, Ind. -- The Madison County Government Center will be undergoing a major overhaul to remove asbestos and upgrade interior infrastructure.
As workers prepare to temporarily relocate offices, the County Commissioners have voted to keep the courthouse open to the public during the week of the move, set for November 27 thru December 4.
Government leaders had considered closing the Madison County Government Center entirely for the week, but revisited that idea due to legal issues.
The court, which operates out of the government center, must remain open to the public that week since there will be active cases.
Dan Dykes with the County Commissioners office says move will begin on November 27, with offices on the first and second floors relocating to property at 10th and Jackson Streets. These include county commissioner offices, along with those of the auditor and treasurer.
The probation department will move to the Mounds Campus.
The courts and their associated offices, on the government center's third and fourth floors, will begin the move on November 30 to the Flagship Center in Anderson.
Dykes says the goal is to allow demolition crews to begin their work in the government center on December 4, ripping up carpeting and preparing the building for the asbestos abatement process.
The entire project should last about seven months, with officers moving back into the Madison County Government Center on July 1st, 2018.
