MADISON COUNTY, Ind. -- Crews have begun the process of removing asbestos-contaminated materials from the Madison County Courthouse.

Records from the County Commissioners office state that the weekend project is the first step in a long process to reduce asbestos in the entire building.

Starting at the close of the business on September 8, crews began removing fireproofing material containing asbestos from the first floor air handler room.

The County Commissioners say crews first zeroed in on the air handler room so that new boilers could be installed before the winter.

Test results of air samples collected over the weekend show the first leg of the project was successful and asbestos levels in that area of the courthouse registered as "none detected."
