INDIANAPOLIS — A man was critically injured in a Christmas Day fire at his apartment on the south side of Indianapolis.

According to a report from the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews were called to the Meridian Court South Apartments, off South Meridian Street, at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday. Multiple callers reported smoke in the hallway coming from an apartment with a possible occupant still inside.

The first unit arrived on scene five minutes after dispatch with nothing showing from the exterior of the apartment building. Upon investigation, firefighters found fire in a first floor apartment. A man was found inside the apartment and was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, the fire department said.

The fire did not extend into any adjacent apartments, firefighters said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, however it may have been caused by an electrical issue, the fire department said.
