RICHMOND — A man was shot by police Sunday morning in Richmond after he approached officers with a knife, according to state police.
Around 11 a.m., a Richmond Police Department officer was sitting in his car on the phone in the parking lot of the Richmond City Building when a man recklessly pulled into the parking lot close to the officer, Indiana State Police Sgt. John Bowling said in a press release.
The 34-year-old man, of Centerville, then yelled "kill me, shoot me," at the officer, Bowling said. The officer called for help and began to slowly drive away from the man yelling at him. Two more officers arrived and got out of their car.
The man then got out of his car, still yelling at officers to shoot him, and stabbed himself, Bowling said.
When officers gave commands to the man, he continued to move closer to officers, Bowling said. An officer shot the man when he got within ten feet of them.
He was eventually flown to a hospital in Dayton, Ohio, with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries, Bowling said.
Detectives are still investigating the incident.
