INDIANAPOLIS -- A building that was once home to a hardware store is now a place for the community.
The Mars Hill Arts Center is located at 2811 Mars Hill Street, not far from South Holt Road and Kentucky Avenue.
Mars Hill Arts Center is a non-profit venture that will focus on pottery, woodworking, arts and crafts, floral design and the performing arts.
Residents of Mars Hill turned out for a grand opening block party on Friday evening.
A schedule of hours when the center will be open is going to be updated monthly on their website.
The arts center was in the planning and building stage for three years and is the work of Lisa and John Schmitz.
The couple said they first wanted to open an art or community center in late 2014.
The building will also be available as a community meeting place at little or no charge.
Its website says the arts center was "created to serve the underserved neighborhood of Mars Hill."
