LAWRENCE, Ind. -- The Lawrence Township School District has found a winning equation for cross-cultural education.
“District Administration” Magazine has just recognized Lawrence schools as a District of Distinction for its very successful dual-immersion program.
The program allows students to attend classes spoken in Spanish and English from grades K-12.
Right now, the program follows a path that begins at Forest Glen Elementary, then moves to Fall Creek Valley Middle School, and then on to Lawrence Central High School.
This fall, however, dual-immersion will expand to Skiles Test Elementary, Belzer Middle School, and Lawrence Central High School.
Program administrator Patricia Gerber says the waiting list was so long; they simply had to branch out.
“We’ve seen great success with dual-immersion,” Gerber said. “The retention rate has been very high – at least 90 percent -- and students have performed above average on most if not all of their school subjects.”
Gerber says dual-immersion is not just about learning another language; it’s about learning different perspectives and ways of communicating in an increasingly global economy.
