LAWRENCE — Two people have died after they were pulled from a car in a pond Friday evening in Lawrence, according to the fire department.
Lawrence and Indianapolis fire department crews were called around 7:45 p.m. to the 9600 block of Basin Street, north of East 42nd Street and North Post Road.
Both people were taken to local hospitals in critical condition where they later died, LFD Media Relations Officer Marc Hickson said in an email.
Divers found the car upside down in the pond, Hickson said.
Their identities haven't been released.
Witnesses told police they saw the car speeding through the apartment complex before crashing into the pond, Lawrence Police Department Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff said.

The incident is under investigation by the Lawrence Police Department.
