Miami Co. man accused of abusing 6 month old

MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. -- A Miami County man was arrested early Thursday morning after police say he abused a 6-month-old child. 

Police say a 6-month-old child was brought to Dukes Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, then airlifted to a trauma center with a suspicious head injury. The hospital notified police and the Indiana Department of Child Services.

The child had an multiple rib fractures and bruises on its head, face and torso. The child also had an acute subdural hematoma, a blood clot in the brain.

Medical staff diagnosed the child with non-accidental trauma and trauma resulting from child abuse. 

After an investigation, Alexander Lockhart, 23, was arrested by Miami County sheriff's deputies just after midnight on Thursday. 

He has been preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent child resulting in serious bodily injury, aggravated battery, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of marijuana. Bail was set at $68,000.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, and more charged could be added later.
