PERU, Ind. -- A Peru, Indiana man was arrested Friday on suspicion of rape and kidnapping.

Dustin Day, 35, was arrested in Norwood, North Carolina after officers from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation served him with a warrant alleging felony charges for rape and kidnapping.

A detective initiated an investigation in August after a 26-year-old Tippecanoe County woman reported that Day had raped her, according to a news release. The purported crime happened in Cass County, Indiana.

Police believe he entered the woman's car near her residence uninvited, while armed with a handgun. Day then allegedly drove the victim to a rural road and raped her, then held her against her will for about 17 hours.

Day has been formally charged with rape and kidnapping.
