BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The death of an Indiana University student found in a Bloomington lake in October has been officially ruled a suicide, the Monroe County coroner said Friday.
Joseph Smedley, 20, was initially reported missing by family members in late September following a strange text sent to his sister from his phone.
Smedley's body was found days later in Griffey Lake, about 3.5 miles north of downtown Bloomington.
The coroner's office said at the time foul play was not suspected, but had not ruled on an official cause and manner of death until this week.
On Friday, Coroner Nicole Meyer said Smedley's death had been ruled suicide by drowning.
Smedley's sister described him as an "intelligent and loving son, brother and friend."
