INDIANAPOLIS — Shelby Wiese says when she met Officer Breann Leath at a Dollar Tree on the east side of Indianapolis, she says she noticed her infectious smile.

"Her and another officer were in there shopping and me and my daughter and my mom were shopping and she just caught my eye as soon as I walked in the door and I'm like oh my goodness, she is so pretty," Wise said. "I was like 'Hey! I just wanted to tell you you are so pretty,' and her smile lit up the whole entire room. Just such an amazing person."

In that moment, Wiese says she felt like she made a new friend and they talked in the parking lot about Wiese's then two-year-old daughter, Nellie.

After that, Leath had a surprise for her daughter. She gave Nellie a teddy bear and some toys.

"I tell you to this day I will never forget the smile she put on my daughter's face, like I'm gonna cry right now," Wiese said.

Leath was shot and killed during a domestic disturbance call Thursday.

The teddy bear Leath gave Nellie is now named Bre.

"She's a hero in my daughters eyes," Wiese said. "I'm very very blessed and grateful to have the opportunity to meet her, and I will cherish that moment for the rest of my life."
