MONROE COUNTY — Monroe County authorities believe a domestic dispute led to a shooting Saturday night that killed a 56-year-old man.

At around 9 p.m. Saturday, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office responded to a house in the 3600 block of North Lauren Lane on a report of a shooting. Deputies found Donald Wayne Francis Jr. lying in the driveway suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and a family member attempting to render first aid.

Francis Jr. was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:58 p.m.

Two family members were transported to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office to be interviewed by detectives. According to information from the sheriff's office, a domestic dispute between Francis Jr. and another family member took place before the shooting.

The argument continued outside the house and Francis Jr. exited the residence with a handgun. A family member, who was not identified, said they retrieved a handgun from underneath the seat of a vehicle in the driveway and shot Francis Jr. once in the chest.

A second family member provided the same account and said Francis Jr. pointed his gun at the other family member prior to the shooting. The sheriff's office released both family members after the interview.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place Monday, and the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office will determine if the shooting was in self-defense or if charges are warranted, the sheriff's office said in a release.
