UNIONVILLE — A Monroe County woman was arrested and charged following an investigation involving a bicyclist who was struck and killed.
According to a release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Alicia D. Hacker faces a charge of leaving the scene of an accident fatality, a level 5 felony, after she was accused of hitting Michael Brooks with her van and leaving the scene on May 13.
Hacker admitted to detectives she was driving home on State Road 45 the night of the collision when she thought she struck a deer. She said she was aware of the crash that killed Michael Brooks, but she never realized she might have hit a person and did not contact law enforcement.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office asked for help in finding a vehicle with recent damage and received information that led them to Hacker's 2003 Pontiac Montana van that was found at her job's parking lot.
Detectives compared damage to Hacker's van and Brooks' bicycle. They found an impression of a Phillips head screw on the van's front bumper that matched a screw that was attached to the rear fender of the bike.
