MONROE COUNTY — Indiana University is investigating after photos and a video posted to social media show large gatherings on boats Friday on Lake Monroe.

The photos shared with WRTV show people crowded on three double-decker rental boats Friday afternoon on Lake Monroe.

Indiana University is aware of the situation, Chuck Carney, a spokesperson for Indiana University, said in an email.

It's not clear if the people on the boats are IU students, but Carney says there will be possible sanctions against students who violate the university's directives on unsafe large gatherings off-campus.

The possible sanctions include suspension or expulsion, according to information on the university's website.

Indiana Conservation Officers are working with the IU Police Department to mitigate the situation, Conservation Officer Lt. Angela Goldman said in an email.

Lake Monroe Boat Rental, Inc. released a statement Saturday in response to the social media posts.
