STINESVILLE--Stinesville Town Council member Reggie Payton says last year's closing of the elementary school in the small Monroe County community was "devastating."
But the Stinesville Elementary building may not be empty for long.
The town council has agreed to buy it for $1 from the Richland-Bean Blossom School Corporation.
The deal still needs to be finalized, but the hope is to turn the building into a town hall and community center, with possibly some other uses.
Stinesville, which is northwest of Bloomington and not far from McCormick's Creek State Park, only has about 200 residents and does not have a permanent town hall.
Payton says the challenge for Stinesville will be finding the money to maintain the former school building.
The town has a tiny budget and is forming a committee to look at grants and other funding sources.
The school system closed Stinesville Elementary because of falling enrollment.
Students now attend other schools in the Richland-Bean Blossom district.
