MONROVIA, Ind. -- The new superintendent of the Monroe-Gregg school system is diving in to his new position.
Dr. Kirk Freeman was approved and appointed as Superintendent by the Monroe-Gregg School Board in April.
He began his new duties in Monrovia July 2, taking over for Dr. William Roberson who retired.
Freeman says he plans to do a lot of listening and learning in the coming weeks.
"My goal is to build upon all of the great successes that the school district has accomplished," he said. "I want to assist the district as it continues its pursuit of excellence in academics, athletics, and in the fine arts. "
Freeman is no stranger to the classroom and the administrative office. He was the assistant superintendent at Greencastle Community Schools and has worked as a teacher and principal at several elementary and high schools in Indiana.
Since 2003, Freeman has also run his own education consulting business.
He says he's impressed with what he's seen so far, calling Monroe-Gregg "a true gem."
"I am excited to be the leader of such a fantastic team. Their motto: “One School-One Team-One Dream” fits the school corporation very well!!"
Dr. Freeman, who received his Ph.D. at Indiana State, signed a three-year contract at Monroe-Gregg with a starting salary of $112,000 per-year.
