MARTINSVILLE, Ind. -- The state will not meet its goal of having the I-69 project between Martinsville and Bloomington complete by the end of August.
But the news isn’t all bad.
For the Labor Day holiday and the following weekend, four lanes of traffic will flow the entire 21-miles between the two cities.
That means holiday travelers and Indiana University football fans heading to the Hoosier’s home opener on September 8 won’t have to deal with construction delays.
A spokesman for the Indiana Department of Transportation says there will be some work zones between September 4th and 7th and the week of September 10.
INDOT’s Scott Manning says the delays were caused by recent rains.
All eight interchanges on the route are done, including the busy one at State Road 46 in Bloomington.
From Martinsville heading south, the exits are at Liberty Church Road, Sample Road, College Avenue, State Road 46, 3rd. Street at State Road 48, State Road 45, Tapp Road and Fullerton Pike.
The new portion of I-69 connects in Bloomington with the existing section to Evansville.
Next year, work will begin on the 25-mile Martinsville section to Indianapolis. When it is complete, there will be an interstate highway from I-465 on the southside of Indianapolis to Evansville.
