NEW CASTLE — Seven people, including five children, were hospitalized Tuesday night following a two-vehicle crash in New Castle.

Derek Bacon, 29, of New Castle, was driving a Dodge Ram northbound on 16th Street at a high rate of speed and without headlights when he collided with a Dodge Journey driven by Jacquelyn K. Clayson, 37, of New Castle, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

State police said five children aged one to 11 were passengers with Bacon in the Dodge Ram.

Clayson was on a short drive from 14th Street to 16th Street when she pulled out to cross 16th Street into the path of the northbound truck, according to ISP.

State police said the force of the crash knocked Clayson's Dodge Journey more than 200 feet northeast into the yard of Henry Community Hospital in the 1000 block of 16th Street.

Clayson was flown by medical helicopter from Henry Community Health to a hospital in Indianapolis with what state police said are believed to be life-threatening injuries. Bacon along with the five children were checked out at Henry Community Health Hospital and released.
