SPEEDWAY — The Town of Speedway's ongoing redevelopment now includes a new hotel.
A 97 room Courtyard by Marriott opened Friday — the first new hotel in years in the town best known as the home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Courtyard is located adjacent to the I 465 - Crawfordsville Road interchange and is part of the Speedway Marketplace development.
Over the last two years, a number of businesses have opened in the marketplace, including Starbucks, Chicago's Pizza, Burger King and a GetGo gas station and market.
In recent years, three older motels were torn down in Speedway in anticipation of new development.
At West 16th and Main Street, a Hilton hotel with 126 rooms is scheduled to open next year.
The hotel will be known as the Wilshaw, named after Wilbur Shaw, a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner and the former president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Redevelopment along Speedway's Main Street has been brisk, with new restaurants, businesses and apartments.
